Sarah Cuscadden partners with the University of Melbourne
Melbourne University recognised that something was missing with their Construction Management Undergraduate and Masters Courses.
They approached Sarah Cuscadden to help develop a new subject. Under the guidance of Sarah, who had been already been delivering a presentation of Risk Management Principles for 2 years, the subject called Management Systems for Construction was created.
Management Systems for Construction is an elective and covers Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Management Systems. The learning is a combination of theory and practice. It provides much needed focus on the management of day to day operations on a construction site, delivered by an industry expert.
Sarah worked with Gao Shang, Lecturer in Construction Management, to develop the elective and deliver the course content.
Melbourne University is the first university in Victoria to offer this type of elective. It is an innovative step to engage industry to deliver such a subject. They are proving themselves to be leaders in the delivery of practical and engaging educational opportunities and experiences that will position their students as 'job ready'.
"This subject goes beyond the traditional approach of covering off safety in the curriculum. In the past students would have completed their construction induction card and perhaps had one lecture on the OHS legal framework.
Now students are given an opportunity to understand and experience how management systems are developed and applied in the workplace. The assessments in the subject are based on actual safety issues that students are likely to face in their full time employment", said Sarah.
It is great that we have our own Probuild experts building these types of relationships with Melbourne University.
Future university graduates will certainly benefit from the direct knowledge of industry practices and real life experiences.
